School of Engineering

Dr Elias Mokua, The Executive Director The Proposed Hekima University during a bench-marking visit at the Kenyatta University, School of Engineering  workshop.

Engineering is a key ingredient to economic and infrastructural progress and any country interested in its own development must invest in and support institutions that train and produce world-class engineers. In the age of the fourth industrial revolution, Mechatronics engineering is one of the main fields of study defining how humanity integrates with technology. The proposed Hekima University school of engineering seeks to develop competence in this field within the African continent by training mechatronic engineers who are ethical, competent, and innovative. The school aims to achieve this by applying the Ignatian pedagogy and an experiential learning model in the training of future engineers.

Mechatronics Engineering

Mechatronics is advanced mechanical engineering that incorporates electrical, electronic, and computer control aspects towards manufacturing methods and processes. It is a relatively new approach to product design that addresses four interconnected disciplines used for all complex modern devices. As a field of study, Mechatronics engineering has a strong emphasis on the design of efficient systems for manufacturing.

Mechatronic engineers combine the principles of mechanical engineering, and computer as well as electronics when designing, building, and managing controls and embedded systems, sensors, actuators, and robotic systems used to control manufacturing processes.  These engineers create and improve automated processes through Mechanical and Electrical/Electronic Engineering and control systems. The programme aims to produce engineers who are able to work or lead multi-disciplinary design teams on products that involve both mechanical and electronic dimensions such as modern precision equipment and robotics among others. Upon successful completion of the course, graduates will possess triple qualifications in mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering in the design of computer-controlled mechanical components and help increase efficiency in the production of manufactured goods.

What are some mechatronics engineer career opportunities?

Mechatronics engineers are employed by Government, academia, the private sector, and Non-Governmental Organizations among other areas. Typical areas of employment include; government departments, academic institutions, electronics companies, the mining sector, the automotive sector, industrial systems design, artificial intelligence, and smart devices firms among other areas. Graduates can also start their own businesses.

To form highly trained engineers who are ethical, and able to develop practical solutions for local and international challenges through innovation, and knowledge production.

  • To develop competent engineers who can identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics;
  • To train engineers who can communicate effectively with a range of audiences, and apply engineering design to address emerging
  • To form engineers who recognize their ethical

Prospective students seeking admis- sion in to the Loyola University School of Data Engineering will have to meet the following qualifications

  1. A Kenya certificate of secondary education (KCSE) mean grade of C+ or its equivalent from a recognized institution
  2. A diploma from a recognized institution
  3. The applicant must have a strong background in Mathematics, Physics, English, and Computer Science.

The curriculum is designed to develop well-trained mechatronics engineers who can utilize their knowledge and creativity to solve real-world problems at a local and international level. Integration of practical activities in business Entrepreneurship & innovation in the Digital Economy, and competence in response to local and international challenges.

Classes will be taught using the flipped classroom model where scholars learn in and out- side classroom using blended learning, physical and online methods. This will enable personalized learning. An experiential approach is included to give students a practical experience.

Graduates will have the advantage of choosing to develop their careers through employment or entrepreneurship. Regardless of the path a graduand chooses, he/ she can develop their careers in many sectors; including areas of robotics, renewable energy, software engineering.

THE BACHELORS IN ENGINEERING (MECHATRONICS)

The Bachelors in Engineering (Mechatronics) program is designed to train engineers of integrity who have the practical experience, and relevant professional and job skills to thrive in employment or entrepreneurship, and successfully contribute towards the development of the growth and sustainability of Africa needs and the world through research and innovation.
